Just a seed but I’m sure it will encourage people to enjoy their lunchtime, if only for one day a week! I will certainly try to follow the idea. Many retired , older people live alone and lunchtime can be a bit “quiet” so this idea may encourage them to try the idea out! Maybe a Wave of Thursday Lunch Breaks may wash over the country! How great that would be, especially for all those young people working from home! Brilliant!

Comment on Slow Food England Awards Winners 2021 by CommunicationsSFUK https://www.slowfood.org.uk/2021/12/07/slow-food-england-awards-winners-2021/#comment-42 Fri, 24 Dec 2021 15:53:57 +0000 http://www.slowfood.org.uk/?p=30918#comment-42 In reply to James.

In response to James’ comment:

The best fishmonger is a public vote – we would agree with you that the quality of fish within the UK (an Island nation) is woeful. Indeed the as a generalisation, the few types of fish we do eat on these shores (except farmed salmon) are not even from here.

The Person of the Year award is not a public vote, but a “lifetime award” if you will in the gift of the director of each nation. Clare Marriage did not win the award for being a previous board member – but this was mentioned in all transparency – but because her company has done more to bring heritage grains to the wider public than perhaps any other. She won her award despite of her involvement in Slow Food – just as some of the businesses which won public votes are supporters of Slow Food, and some are not; some people of the year are connected to us at times, they usually are not; but what links them is their values and commitment to a better food system for all.

Comment on Slow Food Climate Action Continues by George https://www.slowfood.org.uk/2021/07/09/slow-food-climate-action-continues/#comment-37 Sat, 18 Dec 2021 11:39:32 +0000 http://www.slowfood.org.uk/?p=30669#comment-37 Hi there,
Listening to BBC Radio Ulster’s John Toal Show this morning (11:00am) about a local winner of U.K. Greengrocer of the year, Slemish Market Garden, run by Frank and Linda McCooke (great advertisement for Xmas veg) but the presenter also ran down other local winners in other categories like Best Butcher, Baker (and Candlestick maker) in the Slow Food’s Awards too quick for me to take in.
I suppose I could go to BBC SOUNDS to listen again and pause every two seconds but maybe you have a link to local Northern Ireland winners and other Best UK Winners; I can’t find one and would also like to find a retailer for goat meat as my “daughter in law” loves Caribbean food.

Thank you

ps
We love shopping in the small shops Ballymena much more than just the big supermarkets here but they’re ok as well.

Comment on Slow Food England Awards Winners 2021 by James https://www.slowfood.org.uk/2021/12/07/slow-food-england-awards-winners-2021/#comment-41 Mon, 13 Dec 2021 15:39:12 +0000 http://www.slowfood.org.uk/?p=30918#comment-41 Is the UK’s best fishmonger somewhere over 50 miles from the nearest coast?

I’m not doubting the efforts the Fish house have put in and I am sure their win is commendable – but this makes for depressing reading – the quality of fresh fish available to the average UK consumer is frankly woeful. Moreover as a nation surrounded by the sea it is almost inconceivable the poor quality of fish deemed acceptable. It would not fly on the continent that is for sure.

Further person of the year being an ex Slow food board member and chair – doesn’t exactly smack of an impartial process. Again no doubt well deserved but the optics dont look great.

Comment on If you only do one thing today by Debbie Biscoe https://www.slowfood.org.uk/2021/07/20/if-you-only-do-one-thing-today/#comment-38 Sat, 21 Aug 2021 20:38:17 +0000 http://www.slowfood.org.uk/?p=30698#comment-38 We need to grow more plants that can give us plant saturate fat (in the UK and the US they call this ‘Sedge’ – eg Sedge McDonald’s and the BBC Sedge Report on Radio 4.

The environment needs more sat fat – we need more interest in things like steak fries or buttered roast potatoes. Everything is cooked in blood thinners – how does that affect the environment? Even the rats have diabetes now.

We need smaller portions of meat and fish offered to us in the supermarket. There are a lot of single people who are not catered for. The portions of meat and fish sold in the supermarket are way too big.

We need to have smaller portion of fish sold in the Fish and Chip shops.

It’s the worst thing for setting my hayfever off.
